We've said it before and we'll say it again: The Skyline GT-R is an outright amazing machine the car's potential is undeniable. Take this BNR34 Skyline GT-R, tuned by Sunline Racing, able to clock Tsukuba Circuit in well under a minute and in street form no less.
Sunline Racing, also known as SLR, is a hardcore JDM racing shop that lives for only one thing: to run super low lap times. Owner of a number of Japans fastest JDM cars, SLR’s Carbon R34 GT-R is one of its rare street projects.
The recipe for on track domination began with the engine. SLR removed the RB26DETT engine to install a HKS 2.8L Stroker kit. Consisting of a new crankshaft, pistons and connecting rods, the Stroker kit uses increased displacement to push more power to spin the massive Trust T88H-34D single turbo. Exhaust gasses exit into a custom made SLR titanium down pipe and into a refreshingly stealthy SLR titanium exhaust system.
Breathing in through HKS Power Flow intake and SLR Titanium pipe, the T88 turbo blows into Trust intercooler piping and a HPI front-mount intercooler which keeps the intake temps well under control. Sharing space in the nose with a Trust oil cooler kit neatly mounted in the front bumper.
The HKS V-Cam Pro system replaces the intake camshaft and allows the use of variable valve timing on the intake side whenever the system is activated. Interfacing with a HKS F-Con V Pro engine management system, the V-Cam system has been used by SLR to maximize the power band for more than just high-RPM track use.
As impressive as the SLR tuned RB28 engine is, one of the main jewels is hidden out of sight. SLR installed a Holinger 6 speed sequential Transmission. This is known to be one of, if not the best Sequential gearboxes available for the skyline GT-R. The gearbox alone will set you back around £20,000, so it really goes to show you no corners were cut in the production of this epic R34 GT-R.
The stock clutch has been changed out for a 800whp-ready Exedy triple plate clutch, which feeds into an ATS carbon limited-slip differential. The clutch and gearbox although may seem extreme are actually pretty easy to get used to,
In order to repeatedly and consistently stop this massive carbon missile, SLR installed a set of Endless Monoblock six-piston front and four-piston rear brakes. Fitted with huge 370mm front and 332mm rear two-piece brake rotors, the Endless callipers squeeze Endless NA-R brake pads and have proven to be fade-free in testing.
The SLR spec coilovers provide the perfect dampening settings, set up using hours of trackside research. Giving the R34 balance and control at high speeds, these coilovers allow the heavyweight GT-R to dance like a flyweight and drive like a car half its size.
Dry carbon fibre is also used as part of the diet regiment, showing up in the door cards, bonnet, over fender kit, trunk..etc All the body parts, including the front bumper and GT Wing, are produced in-house by SLR.
The lightweight carbon body parts are immaculately moulded, with parts passing for OEM replacements to the passing eye. Offsetting the weight of the six-point roll cage, the carbon body parts combined with the lightweight Bride bucket seat to help bring this R34's hefty curb weight down to a reasonable number.
One thing to note is how the Interior is very tastefully done and although a roll cage has been installed it does not interfere with the driving position, getting in and out of the car or hinder any of the other passengers. As you can see from the interior pics the cage install has been done to a very high standard and is one of the best installs we’ve seen.
Mechanically the car is spot on, starts and idles smoothly whether hot or cold with no smoking. Oil pressure is always strong and water temps are always stable even under hard driving. Currently running around 1.4/1.5bar which sees around 720ps at the flywheel.
Sunline Racing's R34 GT-R is not your average tuned Skyline, and Sunline Racing is not your average tuner garage. Changes have been made to the engine, transmission, brakes, tires, body and interior, but every piece has been engineered and thought out to provide a distinct advantage. So it's no wonder that when you take the mighty Skyline GT-R, and then add in SLR to the equation, you end up with success.
We cannot reiterate how difficult it is to find GT-Rs with this spec in Japan these days.
With the worldwide demand for these Japanese Icons the prices are continuously on the increase. We have been monitoring the market very closely over the past few years and we can assure you there is no sign of prices coming back down. Most Japanese owners whether private/Dealers or tuning shops are simply holding onto their stock as they have become appreciating classics.
